FB3X Drabble Cascade #31 - Independent

Drabble Cascade at FB3X - Every Tuesday

Title: Running Away (G)
Author: charisstoma
Word count: 100
Prompt: Independent

Dew was just settling upon the grass and leaves. He hoped that his footprints darkening the silvered lawn were gone before they discovered he’d left but walking on the crushed gravel drive was something he didn’t want to risk. It wasn’t that far to the city and he had food with him and his saved up allowance, there hadn’t really been that much to spend it on anyway. In a few weeks time, he’d be of age and then there’d be his inheritance and then there was Tony.

Tony. Somehow he’d convince him that he wasn’t a child any more.

Ah, the conflicts of family and desire. I can feel the boldness, the black and white view of life that comes with youth in this one - no compromise - sad, but determined.

Frightening for a parent or guardian if you love the young person. The one you're trying to protect is so cluelessly rushing into probable danger and abuse.

Running away isn't the best way out there to say, "Hey, I'm a grown up."

I agree and the runaway was very naive if not out right foolish to runaway to an older man even if he wasn't about to receive a large inheritance.

I didn't read it as running to the older guy.

The "In a few weeks time, he’d be of age and then there’d be his inheritance and then there was Tony." made me think he was running away for a few weeks and then once he came of age he'd come back, get his inheritance and then try to convince Tony he was no longer a child.

Running to a prospective lover when you're not of age is bad all around. Someone could go to jail even if they didn't do anything.

But what could be so bad at home that Main couldn't wait a few more weeks to be free?

Some young people want what they want when they want it. They could come from a good loving family who only want to protect them from themselves but it's not enough if their hormones have obsessed or been encouraged to obsess for an older love interest.
I saw this happening somewhat like Regency to modern day. I expect that he thought he could convince Tony to hide him until he was of age and I expect that Tony would. How often does a young willing rich dumpling fall into the hand of an unscrupulous older person after all, for the money and the sex.

Boy, your take is so much sadder and world weary than mine.

I used to read romance novels from the thirties and forties where the guy was lucky if he even got a kiss. In one (at least) and girl runs away from home with her younger siblings two months before she turned eighteen because her relatives were going to farm them out and she wanted to keep the family together now that they were orphans.

Sorry it took me so long to comment--I'm finally getting a chance to catch up on everything I missed this week.

This is excellent. It's hard not to admire Drew's naive optimism!

I imagined this as present day as I read it. And I didn't think of Tony in a negative light. I think I pictured him as an older guy, tolerant but not encouraging of Drew's crush. Someone who would send Drew back home, hopefully letting him down easy in the process.

Reading through the other comments was just as interesting as reading the piece itself -- I like those other perspectives as well, though I'm sticking with my head canon for now. :P

*GRINS* Every person brings something different to interpret the work.
I'm glad you liked it *grins*, obviously. It works probably better in present day where nothing criminal is attached to same sex partnering. Legalities of being underage doesn't come into it since Drew's almost legal enough to have his inheritance given over to him. Soooo if only Tony can be convinced and hopefully he will be a hard sell enough that there'll be some convincing needed. THEN I won't be suspicious.
