The "In a few weeks time, he’d be of age and then there’d be his inheritance and then there was Tony." made me think he was running away for a few weeks and then once he came of age he'd come back, get his inheritance and then try to convince Tony he was no longer a child.
Running to a prospective lover when you're not of age is bad all around. Someone could go to jail even if they didn't do anything.
But what could be so bad at home that Main couldn't wait a few more weeks to be free?
