Tribbles! Which ... don't have spines.

I think... those are hedgehog cactus or maybe cholla cactus. Probably the latter.

When we lived in AZ, we went out into the desert and this was pointed out to us as in don't get near it. It doesn't take much to transform them in giant economy sized burrs.

Baby hedgehogs,the animal version, not so bad. Her name was Harriet by the way. The spines don't stick into you and hang on unless you break one off.

I'm thinking that he was riding his bike or jogging in the desert and tripped in the wrong place. Yes, ouch. 2nd look, he was golfing. The rough is really rough in AZ.
