Prompt - Maybe the day had a shitty you.

A heavy sigh echoed in the room as he entered, causing Thurs to rethink whether he wanted to be there after all.
“This is becoming habitual. Maybe you should change your way of viewing things. like maybe doing weekends instead of being part of the normal 5 days. Even doing a split week would be better.”
Lund lifted his head in consideration, “If only. Everybody hates me. Those humans …. Only the excitement of the long holidays makes if worthwhile. That little fillip of joy to sleep late or go on vacation…. Now with the quarantine one day is the same as the other. You’d think being able to sleep later everyday after staying up all night…. That’ll all change back soon enough and I’ll be hated again.”
“Exactly. So change it.”
“How?.”
“So start working on them now,” Thurs coaxed. “Convince them how efficient it was working from home, putting in a totality of hours per the week to equal that 40 hours they need, engaging in Zoom conferences from home, even going into work at a day of their choosing. Remake their feelings for you.”
“You think they would?” Lun’s gloom lifted a bit at the possibilities.
“They might if you sell it right, Mond,” Thurs smiled. “Give it a try. Now’s the time. Strike while everyone is adapting to change.”
“Okay, worst that could happen is it’ll be the same old,” Lund smiled and then frowned in reproof, “my name is French, you know, I’ve told you this over and over; Lundi not Monday.”

Writing: Passive vs Active Voice
Sep. 20th, 2019 02:12 pmPassive vs. Active Voice

Let’s make this short and sweet.
Passive: I was pulled over by a cop
Active: A cop pulled me over.
In a active sentence the subject acts; in a passive sentence the subject is being acted upon.
WHY DO PEOPLE ADVISE AGAINST USING PASSIVE VOICE.
The beach was battered by angry waves. The houses were buffeted by the wind. The shutters were pulled by the storm, straining to stay closed. The sky was filled with dark clouds.
vs
Angry waves battered the beach. Wind buffeted the houses. The storm pulled at the shutters that strained to stay closed. Dark clouds filled the sky.
The second example is clearer, faster, and reads better.
WHEN SHOULD YOU USE PASSIVE VOICE?
First, when you have to present necessary information, but you want to keep the focus on the subject of the sentence.
The house was built by Mr. White in 1990. Tall, contemporary, and pure white, it perched among the lilacs and myrtles, a collection of right angles and rectangular boxes that somehow managed to look weightless.
vs
Mr. White built the house in 1990. Tall, contemporary, and pure white, it perched among the lilacs and myrtles, a collection of right angles and rectangular boxes that somehow managed to look weightless.
In the first example, the focus is on the house. It’s the house that’s important. In the second example, the focus is on Mr. White. We’re waiting to hear more about him rather than the house.
Second, when you want to present a feeling of being acted upon, of being helpless or inconsequential, where who performed the action becomes less important than the action itself.
I was bound, gagged, and thrown into a cell.
The small boat was shattered to pieces.
Jennifer was fired.
Using passive voice is often necessary and appropriate. Remember, if the story needs it, do it, and don’t worry so much about the “right” way.

*grins* Owner is more appropriate.
I've been owned by many cats and 2 dogs in my life.
Perhaps slave is more accurate.(though with dogs, you're alpha in the pack as well).
I don't think animals should be abused and if you take responsibility for them you should take good responsibility.
Emotionally you are a guardian if you've made them a pet.
Legally you are their owner.

Legal drinking age is 21 here in Texas. But I was raised up north.
I was raised in a State where minors could be given alcohol by their parents. Intent was that the parents supervised so kids learned how to drink responsibly.
This was also during a time when the drinking age was 18. They've raised that to 21 now.
My parents would come home and each have a beer which we kids would line up to get a 'sip' of. *smiles* Amazing how when you put your hand up to help steady the can it can retard tipping the can back down and you can get more then 'just a sip'.
Results:
I don't drink often and never if I'm driving at all because I'm not able to function well enough under even a little of the influence to be responsible for the important people and activities in my life.
I agree with how I was raised. Under a parent's supervision children can be introduced to alcohol and taught how to use it responsibly if at all. There is no great mystique to it.
21 seems like a good age but I think too, if you are capable enough to take on adult responsibility like putting your life on the line for your country then you should be capable enough to drink responsibly. If you can't be responsible then expect to earn the full punishment and don't whine about impaired judgement making you do something you wouldn't normally do. It's the same as driving while exhausted enough you shouldn't be behind the wheel or on allergy/prescribed medications.
