“Francis put that down. Bad!”
Francis felt the writhing body in his mouth, his tongue maneuvering the winged figure. It was true they were sweet. He didn’t know how his adoptive Dad always knew to catch him when he was getting into trouble.
“I know because it’s sending out angry mental squeaks. We don’t lick fairies...” he paused, “unless they want to be licked.” He took a deep breath, “until you can hear them, get me to ask for you. And I don’t care how sweet they taste. They eat pollen. You are stealing their food.”
Carefully Francis opened his mouth, using his tongue to support the fairy so she didn’t hook one of her wings on his teeth on the way out. “Sorry.”
The fairy stood hands on hips looking at him and raised one eyebrow before looking over his shoulder to talk to Dad. In a deep squeaky voice, “he’s still pretty young isn’t he.” Turning back to Francis, “when you are older, much older, if you still want to lick a fairy come find me,” and he laughed. “You’re way too young to go around eating fairies.”
Dad growled out something about corrupting the young which sent the fairy off laughing as he flew to another bed of flowers.
Francis didn’t understand then. Fifteen years later he did, and he sought out a certain fairy who kept visiting their garden.
The fairy looked at him hands on hips. “Did you ask your Dad?”
“Think he might have figured it out when he found the artwork I’ve been doing under my bed.”
Suddenly the fairy was much bigger, towering over Francis. “Artist, huh? Anything good?”
From the house came.”too damn realistic for someone with no experience.”
“I take it I can try wooing him then?” the fairy asked.
“Within limits,” came back.
“Da-ad!”
