Slow-Cooker Minestrone Stew

Ingredients

1 package (19.5 oz) gluten-free sweet Italian turkey sausage links, casings removed
1 can (28 oz) Muir Glen™ organic diced tomatoes, undrained
2 cans (18 oz each) Progresso™ Vegetable Classics garden vegetable soup
1 can (15 oz) garbanzo beans, drained, rinsed
1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
1 teaspoon gluten-free Italian seasoning
1 cup uncooked gluten-free elbow macaroni (about 4 oz)
1/2 cup gluten-free shredded Parmesan cheese (2 oz)

Steps
1. In 12-inch skillet, cook sausage over medium heat 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until no longer pink; drain. Spray 3- to 4-quart slow cooker with cooking spray. In slow cooker, mix sausage and all remaining ingredients except macaroni and cheese.

2. Cover; cook on Low heat setting 6 hours.

3. Stir macaroni into slow cooker. Increase heat setting to High. Cover; cook about 20 minutes longer or until macaroni is tender. Sprinkle with cheese.

One day in Venice, sometime near the end of the 14th century, a busy merchant found himself with a few spare moments. Maybe it was a slow day at the docks, or he arrived home too early for dinner. Whatever the reason, he did what people of his era tended to do when they had some time—he took out his notebook and his set of pens, and he put together a page-sized patchwork of his afternoon.

Over 600 years later, you can still open that notebook and see that day. Written in spidery loops are daydreamy calculations regarding how large a particular tree is, and how long it might take to get to Rome. There's a sketch of a pair of colorful ships, and another of two tradesmen in green hats, examining a meal of bread and fish. Keep flipping through, and a whole life emerges. Scribbles and sketches fill each page. Personal anecdotes and hard-won lessons nestle alongside gathered material, including prayers, copied quotations and lists of spices.

Welcome to the world of the zibaldone. A strange melange of diary, ledger, doodle pad, and scrapbook, these volumes—along with similar "hodgepodges" and "commonplace books"—served as a pattern for interior life from the 14th century onward, bringing comfort and inspiration to everyone from Thomas Jefferson to Lewis Carroll.( Read more... )

We're getting our 'Safe Work Environment' training

There is a civil liability if a person of authority knows of or should know of sexual harassment in the work place and or the creation of a hostile or offensive work environment. This liability can apply to individuals and businesses.

It is unlawful to harass a person (an applicant or employee) because of that person’s sex. Harassment can include “sexual harassment” or unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature.

Harassment does not have to be of a sexual nature, however, and can include offensive remarks about a person’s sex. For example, it is illegal to harass a woman by making offensive comments about women in general.

Both victim and the harasser can be either a woman or a man, and the victim and harasser can be the same sex.

Although the law doesn’t prohibit simple teasing, offhand comments, or isolated incidents that are not very serious, harassment is illegal when it is so frequent or severe that it creates a hostile or offensive work environment or when it results in an adverse employment decision (such as the victim being fired or demoted).

The harasser can be the victim's supervisor, a supervisor in another area, a co-worker, or someone who is not an employee of the employer, such as a client or customer.

“See, I told you I was just constipated.”

All that Simon responded with was, “Huh.”

“You were all keyed up for being a Daddy tonight, weren’t you?”

Simon just threw a glance over at Andy and kept walking, walking fast enough that it was difficult for Andy to keep up until he ended up out of breath and bent over with his hands on his knees.

There was a nice large rock just off to the side that looked inviting, just until he caught his breath and the cramping on his right side became more manageable, Andy told himself. Except it didn’t, not exactly.
There was a faint blip in his abdomen as if gas had shifted and relief was in sight.

“Oh, finally. Maybe the gas will push you out and Simon will love me again.”

Pressure built, in that way that flatulence does as it tries to escape. This felt like there was something there pressing to get out. Andy tightened down. In the snit that Simon was in, he wouldn’t put it past Simon to make him walk home rather than take home in the car a former lover who’d fouled his pants.
