Um not getting why it's a big deal?
We had to all take proof of nationality into work. After working there 10+ years I had to take a copy of my wedding certificate in (don't drive, no current passport). Which got shredded. Which meant I had to take another copy in.

We get Social Security cards with our number on it. It's required now that dependents within 1 year of birth (to be listed on our yearly tax form) have one. Requires a birth certificate to get one, even if you're overseas, you go see the consulate then and fill out the forms, otherwise you get the forms and mail them in I think with birth certificate.

Here we have a National Insurance number - which work had, as they've been paying me all this time, but apparently when I joined the company some proof of address/id was in my maiden name still so suddenly that was an issue.
