We get Social Security cards with our number on it. It's required now that dependents within 1 year of birth (to be listed on our yearly tax form) have one. Requires a birth certificate to get one, even if you're overseas, you go see the consulate then and fill out the forms, otherwise you get the forms and mail them in I think with birth certificate.
