Stretched out on the bed, Elert trailed a finger down over a nipple, circling around it and watched it peak and Kormier shiver. He smiled, “Love you.”
“Love you more,” Kormier returned grinning stretching into the caress, “after all I’m going to lose my svelte body bringing a Elert-Kormier hybrid into the world.” His hand stroked down, cupping the slight pooch of his belly.
“Ah, but there’ll be more of you to love and I find that I like the idea of watching your body change knowing that there’s a bit of me mixed with you inside growing into a small kitten,” Elert said leaning down to kiss Kormier.
Kormier frowned slightly, “Poof was being a bit skittish today at the clinic,” he paused and then grinned. “Well more than usual since we were going to the med-vet. I think you are his favorite medical provider even though you’re not one. He’s never recovered from his ‘you can fix anything’ impression; be it feline flu or bee stings.”
With a shake of his head in memory Elert replied, “You’d think that living on the streets like he did for so long, he’d have learned to not to step on a bee. Then again he lived on the outside looking in with most of the street culture, our little naive loner. His mother must have kept him away from any of the other felines, not just the humans, in the neighborhood.”
“Well that’s going to change,” Kormier said firmly. “We’re going to the Crèche tomorrow because he’s not the only one who needs to learn how to take care of a tiny kitten. He and I’ll learn together.”
Back in his bedroom, Poof turned the brochure over to look at the images. It was freaky to think that Papa was like that inside. That he was like that inside, though without the kitten. Would his adoptive parents still want him around when the kitten was here? A cold feeling crept into his tummy and he swallowed. Best to know now and be prepared, no surprises. He got up and crept to his parents’ bedroom door listening carefully because once he had entered without scratching and that was an image imprinted in his mind that shaking his head didn’t help and they’d both been in human form.
He gave a small mew that could easily be missed if they didn’t want to acknowledge his being there.
“Come on in Baby, though it won’t be long before you’ll be big brother Poof,” Elert called. Poof pushed open the door and slipped in, stopping when he saw that they were both in human form and laying side by side on the bed. He gave them a suspicious look which turned into a frown as they both gave him that peculiar smile.
“Why are you smiling like that,” Poof demanded. The smiles became grins and he shook his head, ‘his parents, who could understand them.’
“It’s because you’re cute when you’re like this, all skittish and wary but brave and irritated at the same time,” Kormier told him. “You’ll grow up all too soon into a big cat who’ll go off into the world and do things and we’ll always remember you like this and tell any kittens you had about their Papa and what you were like at this age.” Kormier’s eyes got misty, “Don’t grow up too soon, huh. You didn’t come to live with us until you were older and we missed so much of you as a little kitten.” He nodded, “Now you’re a smart tweenage cat who looks pretty darn fine and will be taking classes with other familiars next year. You might not have as much time for us any more.”
“Naw,” Elert contradicted, “there’ll always be homework that he will need help with. Everybody needs help with homework at one time or another.”
Poof regarded his parents. He had weird parents but he thought that they were going to keep him. The kitten was someone who would need him to help balance their strange with the normal. He leapt onto the bed and chirped at Papa’s tummy then settled down to purring at it. The scritches behind his ears helped and almost … almost he could believe that this was a forever thing, this family of his. Maybe tomorrow he’d show them this neat new thing he could do. Papa E wasn’t the only one who could walk through walls but he, Poof, could play invisible while doing it.
