Yesterday, after a day of bright sunshine and nearly eighty degree weather, I heard water pouring down the steps outside the front door. (I'm in a ground floor "snout house" apartment. Most of the apartment is in front/to the side of the front door and the lowest part of the roofs all face the walkway to the front doors.)
Well, I was wondering why a neighbor would be pouring water out and so much, I sounded like more than a hose. Then I looked out the back window. Rain was a white sheet, which got thicker as I watched. Then I started hearing rain bounce against the door. (My door is a good ten feet in from the roof AND behind the stairs).
Thunder. Lightening. We turned all the computers off, just in case. Hail. The back porch as so humid. And in twenty minutes (I checked) the outdoor temp went from 78 to 66. A moat formed around the building.
We decided not to BBQ.
But the rain stopped before my daughter got off work (although her library did lose power for a moment) and my husband could see the giant cloud as he drove home but by the time he got under the cloud it wasn't even sprinkling and the water had receded from the pathway to the building so neither got their feet wet.
That kind of rain is hard to drive in. You wonder if; you'll get sweep off the road, if the hail will break out windows, if some irresponsible person will lose control or drive too fast and collide with you. Here with the flooding, they've brought in helicopters to rescue people from the cars if they've driven or been swept into the flood, or in some cases their homes. Have never been so glad that my Mom was paranoid enough to make sure that when they bought this house it would be above water even if the dam, which is less than 2 miles (if that) from here, should give way. There's this really neat road that runs through the spillway. Haven't checked but I would imagine that the road is blocked off as hazardous to cross.
Am glad that everything was good for all of your family. Now are you going to put a sign up warming for alligators in the moat next time?

I'm just glad I wasn't out in it.
