What Cats Think of Other People
Last week we covered Fanglish cat slang terms that relate to how cats interact with one another. This week, the lesson covers how cats interact with and react to humans that do not belong to them. Cats and humans have such interesting relationships, so I knew this one would be extra entertaining. Plus, my feline informant always delivers with the best catcentric, underground scoop, and this one is as juicy as they come. He has to be careful, of course, so his feline brethren don’t catch him unloading their secret slang, but he’s easily swayed with treats and the promise of some fresh catnip now and again. We just have to keep everything hush-hush. We can do that, right? I knew I could count on you.
So what do you say? Are you ready? Here are this week’s Fanglish terms, all of which relate to the relationship between cats and the people their humans have invited into their home.
Flee control
The act of placing a cat in a closed room while movers or other humans come and go from a building, thus preventing the feline escape.
In an act of flee control, The Lady locked Mittens in the bathroom while the delivery humans carried new furniture into the house.
Hell’s bells
The sound of the doorbell.
Hell’s bells rang throughout the house and Tiger immediately scurried behind the sofa.
Diver down
A cat who quickly dives under the bed.
Monkey knew The Lady was about to give him his nightly pill, so he immediately became diver down in the guest bedroom.
Dinner and a show
The act of cleaning one's rear area in full view of a human's dinner party guests.
The Lady was embarrassed when my dinner and a show distracted her guests from their flank steak.
Handling charges
A cat scratch administered to a human by a cat who obviously doesn’t want to be handled.
The Man’s friend held Patches for a whole five minutes, and when she became irritated, she knew it was time for handling charges.
Present moment
The wonderful time when a human guest arrives with cat treats or toys.
Lucy and Peanut heard Grandma’s voice in the living room and knew it was the present moment.
Guest roll
A friendly greeting in which a cat rolls back and forth on the floor when a visitor arrives.
The Lady’s sister arrived and Mocha treated her to a guest roll.
Company downsizing
The exiting of house guests.
The Lady’s party was loud, and Oreo was happy to see the company downsizing.
Unsolved mysteries
Other animals’ mysterious smells that are attached to human visitors.
Stripes spent all evening pondering the unsolved mysteries that arrived with The Man’s Uncle Steve.
Magnetic cattraction
The force by which a non-cat lover attracts a cat.
The Man’s coworker entered the home and Felix felt an instant magnetic cattraction.
I hope you enjoyed this week’s seasonal Fanglish post. Please join us again next week for a new list of terms. And remember … shhh!
