Beginning of the school year:
A day in the life of a Library Administrative Assistant ie. Library Clerk. Title change sounds better and they tack on more money.
4 classes of check outs.
No the circulation files are not yet updated from end of last year *rolls eyes* when has
that ever stopped us. Destiny is updated out of district. New to us students done in
spread sheet to be transferred when students are in circulation catalog.
24 books finished and shelf ready.
#?(God only knows) books barcoded and put into circulation catalog. AR levels determined.
Spine labels printed. More processing needed (see to dos).
2 teachers scheduled for library use.
Convince 1 teacher that yes it is better to do the research in the library because we won't
let our magazines go out of the library. Classrooms have scissors.
Teacher, confirming check out and orientation to the library date, scheduled. She said
pre-approved by my librarian. Then schedules research too. Tell teacher that computers
won't be available for student usage as students are new to Middle school, computers
require active directory, students aren't entered yet. No I can't enter them. Student
processing done on district level.
Librarian becomes upset because teachers are scheduling library usage while she is not
there to discuss their class instructural needs. Suggest she e-mail the scheduled teachers
to confirm and determine what they want to do with their classes. Response from teachers is
the same as what I told her and what is reflected in paperwork I obtained from teachers.
*sigh* Love my librarian but....
Note to self: refer teachers' future scheduling to Librarian (again); I'll look lazy and
incompetent but Librarian will be happy.
To do:
Finish dust jacket processing: put on plastic dust jacket covers, spine labels, AR level dots.
More class check outs. *smile*
Convince Librarian to send out e-mail to teachers re: scheduling of library usage.
Have teachers contact her with requests by e-mail or during her work hours. It'll sound so
much better if she tells them I can't schedule them and why then if I tell them. *rolls
eyes*
Note to self: Use extreme tact while suggesting this.

*giggle* How uncouth. That's why we have copiers. :B

Date: 2009-08-27 04:14 am (UTC)Had a book come back to the library with the same problem.
The kids are immigrants, some refugees. They don't understand all the rules and why nots or have the language to understand those things.
Thanks. Normal things in conversation help right now. *kiss*

Date: 2009-08-27 04:44 am (UTC)Budget cuts are a problem at our libraries too. Lots of the smaller branches (particularly in impoverished areas) are getting closed - they don't even take the kids to get library cards during school any more, like they used to. And they're not recycling the books and putting them in the other libraries because "there isn't enough room." *growl*
Yeah, it's not their fault, but it's hard not to get frustrated with them. It's hard because language isn't a small barrier to overcome. :|
