Some locks had been secured on the mesh of the grating for a long time, long enough to rust until even if the key were available the mechanism still would not open. Of course if one had a bolt cutter it would make quick work of ending the lock’s imprisonment, much faster than any divorce court ever could.
Aaron fingered the lock he and Ian had ceremonially affixed to the barrier as a token of their love, back in the day before wandering eyes and emotions had shattered any trust or reliance he had for Ian. His fickle lover was more officially anchored to another in a government sanctioned bond now and by reports had already started cheating on the poor sod.
Aaron sighed. It was time to sever this symbol of false love from his life, that daily reminder of what had been. Perhaps in future he’d find another to entrust his love with or not, he shrugged. He picked up the bolt cutters, neatly snipping the shackle and removing the combination lock that had never needed a key to open it.
That really should have warned him, as he held the red heart in his hand, a lock so easily removed with just the right numbers dialed in. He laughed and tossed the lock into the water, the bottom of the river must be littered with countless keys and now a lock. Reaching into his pocket he brought out the rigid paper and plastic blister pack. With the snick of his knife he slit open the packaging and removed the steel contraption. It was shiny and bright in the sunlight, a good representation of what he wanted his life to be like from now on. Carefully he threaded the shackle through the mesh, snapping it firmly closed. Happiness and love came in many forms, it was time he explored those possibilities and if there was a special someone for him again, well … let it happen untrammeled by a ghost.
He strung the lock’s keys on a leather thong and put it around his neck, smiling, a reminder it was he who held control of what his life could be in the future.
When years later he and Graham stood beside the fence, there were two red heart shaped padlocks affixed side by side and to each other. Each had a combination, the same one so that both of them knew it, and each knew that they were joining themselves to the other because they wanted to be together yet remain strong in who they were individually.

Date: 2014-05-31 01:28 pm (UTC)I waited for a long long time for you to write your take on this but *sniffles* it didn't happen. Then I looked at the words you gave with the prompt and thought maybe you wanted someone else to write AS WELL. Evil sneaky Meeple.
I kept getting it to the end and went hmmm, should mention the keys. Then it was hmm should show him happy afterward and then had to show that he hadn't slipped back into depending on someone else for his happiness but to have found it with someone equally as strong but romantically loving.
*grins* So the keys aren't on the bottom of the river but you don't mind that the lock itself, much larger than a couple keys, is. *GRINS* I cringed at that after I'd written it but it was too perfect.
Evil evil meep.
