‘It’s only in the depths of my belly, the quivering,’ he thought. It made no matter, this was a git-it-done thing.

They’d had that discussion before, he and Sam, over ‘what is a hero?’ A hero was someone who went in where fools dared, not because they wanted to but because it was needed regardless of the fear it inspired.

The fire roared in front of them.

He turned, exchanging last glances with his lover and, there before everybody, pulled Sam into a kiss declaring his love. “Let’s go be heroes.”

Together they advanced to do battle with the blaze.
