The plague had started in some research facility over the mountains or perhaps arrived from some place in the Caribbean. It didn’t really matter. It was here now.
The doors were locked and barricaded, the shotgun fully loaded; ten boxes of ammo were stacked close by. One shell Michael held reserved, neatly labeled in permanent marker, ME.

A hole in the boards over the windows revealed a knowing, horror widened eye staring in.
Michael steadied the barrel and fired the shot into the zombie who was his son. The gun’s report sounded again, using up the carefully labeled shotgun shell.

The stumbling walk had severely slowed her as she’d pulled her limbs along. Homing instinct and memories of food drove her. She heard the first loud clap of thunder that wasn’t nature made and then the second shortly after. Her lurching steps quickened, the overgrown weeds dragging at her as if they were trying to hold her back.

The silhouette of the house was slowly revealed as she neared it. Home. A dark shape lay slumped on the ground outside one of the boarded up windows. She bent to the body and began to eat what had been her son.

Yikes. You know, I think there are some books/covers/ideas you just shouldn't be exposed to.

This author has a 3rd book coming out in Sept. in this story arc. It has a hand with blood encircled nails reaching out.
I haven't read these. The students love them. Middle Schoolers (11 to 14). Now that is frightening.

These were fun to write. I think it's the shock value.
