Title: Earth Shattering
Author: charisstoma
Word count: 185
Every day life in a Library.

The globe spun out of control colliding with that dull hollow sound that announces catastrophe. A crack opened in the ocean near Indonesia slicing up towards the Asian continent.
The Library worker, with a glare that could melt flesh from bone, looked at the student. A student who stood gazing forlornly down with an opps plainly spread across his face and a furtive glance around to see if anyone had noticed.

Thunder rent the air, “How many times have you heard me say, to you and others, to treat the Earth with care?!” A deep breath for patience followed, “Now bring it to me!” was growled.

Presented with the globe, the library minion pulled out her Scotch Magic Tape and taped over the new fault line, watching closely as the break sealed leaving only a scar to mark the mishap. With a sigh, she looked deeper and mourned at the devastation the young godling had caused.

“Now put the World back in its proper place. Carefully!” she commanded and went back to reading Horton Hears a Who by Dr. Suess. She so understood Horton’s anxieties.

I was intrigued by how this story began so apocalyptically and then telescoped down to a more human size drama (or does this take place in some divine realm?)

I think you pasted twice in the last paragraph.

I read there are tornados happening near you - not too near I hope?

Thank you. I knew that I'd pasted that paragraph intact but the post didn't seem to have the last bits so I redid that part. Corrected now. Thank you.

*grins* This came about after nervously watching a student play toss the globe like a beach ball while changing the roll in the tape dispenser. I was raised on Suess and have always loved the premise of there being worlds we may not be aware of surrounding us and surrounded by us.

Thank you. And thank you, my family are all safe. *hugs*
Aren't you UK? Texas weather was mentioned all the way over there? @o@

The world is the world no matter how small we make it seem.

Yes, I'm in the UK - Texas tornadoes was the leading headline on Yahoo, with lesser British weather dramas reported underneath. It is a small world, possibly surrounded by thoughtless and curious students.

Ahahaha! XD

Not a fun thing to happen at work, but it makes for a good fun story! And I do hope that doesn't happen with the version of the Earth we all live on. O.o

Oh worlds within worlds within worlds and which one are we?

I'm slithering back into writing. New computer doesn't have all its muses loaded yet. And this fic was written at work so it doesn't count.

I don't understand the Dr. Suess reference but this did make me smile, because I can really see it happening.

I wish Scotch Tape could fix the bigger world so easily...

*shakes head at you* I thought everyone had been exposed to Horton and the little dust speck inhabitants known as Whos.

Go here and click the link to read a sample of the story. It will take you far enough in the story.*grins*

Now think of what the Library minion is sad about looking down at the world after its being dropped. Sure the globe is bigger than a speck of dust but a world is a world no matter how large or small.

Dr Seuss isn't that big in Australia. I mean - I've heard of him, but he wasn't really marketed to kids here in the same way. I was also a pretty precocious reader, so I actually skipped a lot of the picture books stage - I read a lot of Golden Books, and Winnie the Pooh, but then I sort of went straight to Enid Blyton. So the stories aren't familiar to me!

Aw, that's sweet. Go Horton.

a world is a world no matter how large or small

That's really beautiful, Charis. :)

Can't take credit for that. The book has "A person's a person no matter how small". *grins* I was just using it.

No Suess?!! He's iconic here. Cat in the Hat and everything.

His books are around, and thanks to the abundance of USA-centric TV and film media, I know of them, but the chances of Everyone Of My Generation Having Read A Dr Seuss Book aren't as high. But maybe it was different for others, given that as I said, I skipped about half of the picture-book reading stage.

(Um. Hungry Hungry Caterpillar, Farthing Wood. The Maisy Middleton books. Mostly I remember Aussie writers like Graham Base, Mem Fox, Pamella Allen, Jackie French - see this PDF for the kinds of really popular Australian children's books I remember, if you're interested.)

I actually think it's nice that this is one area where USA-centric media is less pervasive - it really dominates here to a degree where it's hard for creators of Australian media to get the kind of recognition they deserve.
