Theatre Arts....she works alot with the Resource Teacher but her bedside manner was ..well, the patient died. She attacked. The child has turned in no homework, yes she said he was aware of what he needed to do. Very confrontational, which is not the best way to deal with him. He is very non- confrontational. After a day of fuming and trying to see it from her level, you have to understand that she turns out high grade theatre productions at the high school, something she said about TAKS requirements for the course and not being able to make many modifications for his IEP makes me think that she doesn't think he can do it. He needs to take responsibility and coddling isn't good for him, this I understand and I want him prepared for college. Asperger's doesn't have to be a limiting condition, esp for a kid who in 8th grade attains a graduating senior level in math on the PSAT.
He will need to take speech before he graduates and theatre arts might be a good prep. But oh the lesson he and I went over last nite.
6 questions....the first was : What belief do you hold that you will never change your mind about? Most kids would blow this off with a religion answer but not this child. He starts off with: Time changes all things. I tell him that doesn't answer the question which is about his personal beliefs, that he needs to play the game of giving the teacher what she wants....just lie, damn it. HE IS stubborn. So after a lot of talking and telling him that if he wants to use the "time" answer he has to personalize it.. and brain storming ideas on what he means, we come up with: "Time changes all things. Time changes everything, everbody; minds, bodies, lives, souls." (I did not feed this to him, I swear)
2. Was what he was striving to do or be. answer: intelligent and interesting.
5. was a question about at age 75 what he hoped he would have accomplished. answer: graduate from college. I could have cried, this kid has so little sense of self worth.
So much of this assignment which most kids could just blow out was for him a trial. He has no idea what he wants or expectations of what he will be. He just knows that he doesn't want to live on the street. Again when he said that I wanted to cry. Sometimes this is so depressingly hopeless.
