Victor stared at the red marks around his wrists, pulling his cuffs down to hide them. Still when he reached for the plate of buttered toast, they peeked out into view. Across from him, Linus smiled.
“Would you like some strawberry jam with your toasts? It’s been a good year for the strawberries. They were especially ripe and tasty.”
With a barely discernable tremor Victor was able to murmur a, “thank you, yes please.”
Rising slightly, holding out the jar of jam part way across the table but just out of reach so Victor would have to rise slightly too, Linus commented, “always so polite. I love your manners; ‘please’ is such an underused word.”
He smiled again as Victor re-sat himself in the chair with a wince and he started humming the tune whose lyrics were, “Forever. Forever. I’ll love you, forever. Forever’s a long, long time.”
Victor shot him a sharp glance and with a grimace of discomfort shifted in his chair while trying to alleviate the cloth binding of his trousers.
