sawtooth 1 left

Sawtooth Patchwork is a traditional quilt block pattern that's been known by other names, including Mrs. Brown's Choice.

Take a look at the illustration—the four blocks shown are all the same Sawtooth Patchwork design. Notice how much different the quilt blocks look when you alter the position of color and color value within the patches.

Choose from two sizes.

6" x 6" (for the sampler)

or

12" x 12" if you prefer to sew larger blocks.

Quilting Fabrics & Cutting Chart
The colors in the cutting chart will make a quilt block that's similar to the top left quilt block in the illustration. Change colors and values as desired.

Change print sizes if you wish, but try to avoid large prints, especially in 6" quilt blocks. Try one or more tone on tone fabrics to add visual texture without overwhelming the design. Avoid directional fabrics for small squares that will become triangles at the corners of square-in-a-square units.

To Make One 6" Saw Tooth Patchwork Quilt Block
The quilt block is made up of five square-in-a-square units and four half square triangle units (all quick-pieced).

For square-in-a-square blocks used in the midpoints of rows:

Green print: (8) 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" squares
White or very light print: (8) 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" squares
Black print: (4) 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" squares

For block center:

Brown print: (1) 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" square
Red print: (4) 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" squares

For half square triangle units used in block corners:

Green print: (2) 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" squares*
Brown brown print: (2) 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" squares*
*You might prefer to cut these squares slightly oversize, and then trim the finished half square triangle units back to their correct unfinished size before using them in the block; follow the link to instructions below.

To Make One 12" Saw Tooth Patchwork Quilt Block
The quilt block is made up of five square-in-a-square units and four half square triangle units (all quick-pieced).

For square-in-a-square blocks used in the midpoints of rows:

Green print: (8) 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" squares
White or very light print: (8) 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" squares
Black print: (4) 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" squares

For block center:

Brown print: (1) 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" square
Red print: (4) 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" squares

For half square triangle units used in block corners:

Green print: (2) 4-7/8" x 4-7/8" squares
Brown brown print: (2) 4-7/8" x 4-7/8" squares

Make the Square-in-a-Square Units for Saw Tooth Patchwork
Read the Snowball quilt block construction instructions* before beginning if you aren't familiar with using quick piecing methods to sew small squares to the corners of a large square in order to create triangles. Snowball blocks have corner triangles that are smaller than those in the square-in-a-square units, but the same method is used to construct both.

Instructions are for the 6" square block. Substitute large pieces for the 12" block.

1. Gather the (8) 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" green squares and the (8) very light squares of the same size. Draw a line from one corner to the opposite corner on the back of each square.

2. Align a marked square with the corner of a larger square as shown in the Snowball instructions, placing right sides together. Sew a seam on the marked line. Trim the excess fabric 1/4" from the seam.

3. Press as-is to set the seam (always).

4. Flip the corner fabric right side up and carefully press it into place. Avoid stretching the fabrics.

5. Use the same technique to sew a green square to the opposite corner.

6. Sew remaining two corners—one with a light square and the other with a green square—unlike colors are positioned diagonally from each other. Press the unit. It should measure 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" (try pressing seam allowances in corners in opposite directions—your goal is to press so that the unit lies flat).

7. Make a total of four identical square-in-a-square units. Set aside.

Sew the Center Square in a Square
Use the same technique to sew four red squares to the corners of the larger brown square.

Make Four Half Square Triangle Units
Grab the 2-7/8" brown squares and the green squares of the same size. Use my easy sandwiched half square triangle unit instructions to create four units, pairing unlike colors. Each completed unit should measure 2-1/2" x 2-1/2". The last page of instructions illustrates how to trim back oversize units.

Assemble the Saw Tooth Patchwork Quilt Block
1. Arrange all nine units into three rows as shown, taking care to position colors to match your chosen layout.

2. Sew the components of each row together. Seam allowances will likely be a bit bunched no matter which way you press them—press allowances in adjoining rows in opposite directions.

3. Join the rows, carefully matching all raw edges and seam intersections. Press the quilt block. It should measure 6-1/2" x 6-1/2" (or 12-1/2" x 12-1/2")

Try the magic 8 half square triangle unit method when you are making lots of identical units.

snowball method
Some quilters do not trim the tips at all. Leaving them intact puts an extra layer of fabric under block corners, but seems to add some stability, so try it both ways to see which method you prefer.
