There is in his espousal of memory and affection belonging to another human being something characteristic of his seriousness. He had a conscience, and it was a romantic conscience.
-- Joseph Conrad, Lord Jim, 1899-1900

Yes, espousal is the word used in this example.
Here it's, adoption or advocacy of a cause or principle but still what?

I blame Luz for this and curses in which Satan is mentioned.

Shrilly the rooster crowed. He didn’t want to wake, ‘please don’t make me wake’.
He shivered his way into sleep addled rousing. There was a heated wicked chuckle at his back and hot arms tightened around him preventing his escape.

“Ah, it is so nice to wake in the arms of a paramour.” The bedclothes rustled and Dan shivered again at the contrast of heat and the icy cold inside him that twitched, plumping into a hard wakefulness. “Shall we take up where we left off then?” was asked but the question was purely rhetorical.

He’d thought it odd at the time, he’d wanted a charm to claim a lover and instead ended up purchasing rights to a pair of roosters with a signature required for possession, the same demonic roosters that had induced him back to consciousness.

“So hot around me,” was sighed in pleasure, “So hot for me. Perhaps I may even seduce you totally with time.” Another chuckle played in the darkness over the song of Dan’s rhythmic lust filled cries.

‘Thank God this is a time limited purchase,’ was Dan’s last coherent thought for a while, for he was a lawyer and had stipulated it in the fine print with possibility of an option for renewal. It was the euphemistic definition of cock that had been his downfall.
