Kitten bathing wasn’t too terrible, almost fun really, Poof thought, they squirmed trying to get away. It was a game to the kittens, who’d try to escape and hop away as fast as little springed legs would take them. He’d learned to plop a fast paw down on a kitten and apply tongue starting wherever was handiest. It wasn’t all that important to lick with the grain of the fur, the fur wasn’t that long on most of them anyway.
“Many-legged prey toy!” a small squeaky mew brought about a short statured wave converging over to one side of the room. Slightly older kittens took up the cry when they got close enough to see the center of the cautious circle of furry little bodies, “A Spider! Yea!”
“Eeeek, it’s on Hithy!” one voice cried, “and it’s big!” There was a kicking roil of tiny combat centered in the middle of the circle of kittens.
“Kill it, Kill it, Kill it!” the mewed chant rose.
“Oh Lord, who let a spider into the Creche?” one of the adult parents complained.
“It’s only a pretend spider,” was answered.
“Why would you do that,” was asked in irritation by a different parent of wizardly persuasion alighting from atop a chair.
“Because IiiiiT’s SPIDER DAY!” was cheerfully replied by a kitten, old enough who should have known better.
“That’s in March, Felix !” an exasperated adult voice told him.
Poof went over and retrieved one of the kittens, carrying it back in his mouth to its family's nest of blankets to recommence an interrupted naptime. Dropping it into the box, he went back to separate out another of its siblings and as he passed Kormier he couldn’t help asking around a mouthful of kitten, while eyeing Kormier’s tummy, “Only one right?”
