That mosque that they want to build overlooking Ground Zero..
I understand the emotional aspects of it but if everyone would just stop forcing this into the headlines. It probably would have been quietly taken care of by now.

Ironic that in the political climate where state's rights vs. federal rights are being debated that a city's right to decide what goes where is being questioned by people who are not residents of that city. Don't know if the zoning commission for NYC puts religious establishments as being able to be built in commercial/business zoned areas without a waiver or whatever it's called.

Someone more knowledgeable want to provide zoning information?

It's a community or cultural center and a mosque -- and yeah, there are other religious etablishments in the area (Jon Stewart was talking about a mosque that's been there, i.e. within a few blocks of location, for forty years).

Still looking for a couple of good links which I saw recently.

(And everybody I know who is a New Yorker thinks the rest of us should keep the fuck out of their business, especially given how much DC/Bush screwed them over on funding for disaster relief).

I love that no one thinks it's disrespectful to have porn parlors that close to Ground Zero, but a Muslim Center, OMG!!! [sigh] Not that I think there's anything particularly wrong with porn parlors :) but the sort of people who are waxing indignant about this would usually be all flaily about porn, too.

Everyone seems to forget all the Muslims who died that day. It's not like the Christians were the only one who lost loved ones, any more than the attack was made by (or approved by) every Muslim in the world. :/
