A shrill scream reverberated through the house, causing Ben and his neighbour and that guy who just moved in across the street to leap into action. All three ran into the house for the source of the horrible crime. A few kids playing in the street stopped their game leaving their ball to roll unheeded down the hill. Their eyes huge and watching.
Jamie was in the corner chair curled in on himself shaking, little 'oh, oh' moans escaping from behind the pillow he clung too.
There didn't appear to be any danger. No blood. No obvious injury. There was a large book thrown to the floor and knowing how particular Jamie was about his books being kept immaculate Ben picked it up without thinking, even as he approached his lover to solve what pained him.
'Don't you bring that near me. That infernal, demonic, BOOK!' 'Er? It's a book' Ben gave his followers an awkward smile they were all breathing hard as adrenaline left them confused with no monster to battle for fair maiden...well dark haired tempter but same sentiment!
'Don't' Jamie inched away flinching from the book, it had Ben read the cover. 'Pop-up phobias? What. The. Hell?' Peering at a random page was all the look he needed.
The book went flying, almost hit Mr just moved into the street.
On the upside the spontaneous BBQ that night was a street event, everyone came, even the crochety Misses in number five. There were re-enacted screams and tales of daring rescue and the biggest loudest cheer as a string tied book was added to the flames.
It seemed everyone there had a phobia, by morning Jamie was declared a hero for surviving the nightmare pages and several sheepish -very tipsy- people assured him they'd never have braved the book.
