charisstomaMeep - if I put this under a cut do you have to open it to see it or does the cut protect you? If it makes a difference I don't think they have mouth parts um cicadas- both the nymph and adult forms have a beak (aka rostrum), which they use to suck fluids called xylem from plants. This is how they both eat and drink.
It is absolutely beautiful! And I'd completely agree with you except... I've handled cicadas. They were smaller ones and a different species, and they are indeed "mostly harmless", but there is one creepy aspect: they're rather stupid and will sometimes use their proboscis to poke into your skin, presumably thinking that you're a tree branch. They're also dumb enough to drill into car tires, so they aren't trying to hurt people. They're drilling everything to figure out of it is food.

I'd still handle that beautiful tropical one, but I'd be a little cautious lest it suddenly drill into my arm.
We caught a grasshopper when we lived in Rep.de Panama that was 8" long. There's something about those moist higher temperatures that grows bugs big.
