“They’re so cute together,” Elliot cooed quietly in a tired voice because everyone, even him, knew that you did absolutely nothing to wake babies. You did not wake a sleeping baby on pain of death at the hands of your co- parent, even when they loved you but you knew you’d be in a world of hurt if you did. It was okay, he understood and so Elliot grabbed his husband and squeezed because he could not squee. He wanted to sleep for as long as the two sweet babies would let them and he hoped that some day, if he lived that long, these two babies would have babies just like them because though he loved both of them the parent’s curse of revenge by grandchild was being well earned.

“Must breathe,” Jordan whispered in Elliot’s hug.

“How long do you think we have?”

Jordan glanced at their two sons curled in a kitten-puppy hug. “No idea.” His eyes were round pleading circles as he hopefully whispered. “Book says about 4 hours, if we’re lucky.”

“The baby monitor is plugged in, sleep is gooooood,” was uttered in muted zombie voice. The whole conversation was being done with mouthed words and whispers.

As they crept down the hallway towards their own bedroom a small whimper stopped them in their tracks, panicked eyes staring at each other and then back fearfully at the nursery but it wasn’t repeated and with a sigh the stealthy parents continued until with a soft click their door shut. Faintly the sound of a shower could be heard.

From down the hall the kitten familiar yawned then purred cuddling into his obviously adopted sibling, “That whimper was perfect, Hank.”

Hank gave his own wide yawn, “How long do you think we should give them this time? I’m starting to feel kinda hungry again.”

The sound of the water shut off and with the innate sense of self preservation that small children possess, to prevent more siblings too soon, Hank and Everett wiggled to the edge of their basket. Everett pawed at the towel and then gave out with an incessant piercing mewing. It was joined by Hank’s sharp yips of hunger.

Dead silence fell in the other bedroom followed by tired groans. Thuds of fast moving feet were joined by softly given urgings for speed ‘before the babies fully woke up’.

Two harried men paused at the doorway surveying the situation and promptly changed to cat form. One grabbed up the puppy familiar and settled in a second basket to start the larger of the two babies nursing and the other picked up the kitten to place him next to the puppy before beginning his job to washing the places that needed it and then to change out the towel from the first basket so it would be ready for the next feeding.

After a half an hour that felt like much more, the two parents furtively escaped leaving the babies to sleep in situ hugging each other.

“Cute,” Jordan breathed and wondered if they’d ever get to sleep through the night, dragging himself back down the hall. He growled to himself, and just loud enough for Elliot to hear, “Cute. Especially when they’re sleeping,” and added with emphasis, "so we can.”

Everett just nodded.

You have to be a parent to really understand. I used to test my oldest, kind of like a cake, by touching her ear and if there was no reaction at all I knew she was asleep enough to be put in her bed without worrying she'd wake up while doing that.
