“Poof. Could you come here a moment, please?”
Poof appeared hesitantly carrying the kitten in his mouth which probably was a well thought out maneuver on his part. It allowed for mumbling or not being able to talk at all if the question was going to be uncomfortable. Cormier was right behind him with a questioning look on his face.
Elert pointed into the Master bedroom at the bed and raised an eyebrow. Cormier took those few steps to see what was the issue and pulled in a breath turning to Poof.
“Please give me Stinky,” Cormier said. The kitten had graduated to a new name when he started drinking from a saucer and subsequent using the litter box. Cormier continued, “so that you can clearly explain this small person’s presence. You could be in big trouble taking a kitten that’s not yours out of the Crèche.”
“He’s not from the Crèche. He was outside the building hiding under some shrubbery and he was wet and cold and afraid,” Poof mumbled. “He followed me home,” he said more loudly as if to justify it.
Elert frowned, “But he must have parents who are looking for him. Worried about their kitten. The world, as you know isn’t a safe place for kittens especially as it seems he’s a kitten familiar.”
Stinky had crawled out of Cormier’s arms to the floor and then up onto the bed to stare at another little person that looked a bit like him.
“He is a familiar kitten. I licked him and he tastes like Stinky,” Poof nodded his head. “I couldn’t just leave him there and the Creche was closing for the night and he was afraid when he heard some people talking as they walked by. I picked him up and carried him for a bit as if he were Stinky so no one knew different. When I put him down he followed me, just like Stinky does sometimes.”
“You let Stinky walk outside with only you to guard him??” Cormier growled.
“I’m never far and I can grab him and poof him with me if there’s any trouble,” Poof proudly explained.
Elert was the one to say, “We’ll talk about that later. It would be nice to know that your talents are growing when find out that they have. But about this kitten…”
“He was wet and dirty and scared,” Poof said again. “I don’t think he’s been groomed for days if not longer, the time it took me to get him clean and fluffy like he is now. He’s a stray like I was.”
Cormier and Elert exchanged looks then Elert nodded, “Okay, I guess he can stay for now,” he reached to pick up the kitten who hissed sparkles at the hand trying to move him.
Stinky jumped back; puffing up, kitten fur extended in the irregular pattern that is all kitten adorable, little back arched and body sideways to the attacker, small stubby bottle brush tail straight up. With a angled bouncing he set out to attack his opponent or at least frighten him. Elert’s hand instead scooped up Stinky, cupping him under the kitten’s just fed full belly, to hold him protectively up against Elert’s chest near his neck where he crooned to him.
An emboldened Stinky from his raised venue bravely hissed down at the other kitten but stopped when Poof appeared in front of the kitten protectively, saying “No, Stinky.”
A tiny voice called out, “No, Sinnky,” right after, the kitten crawling under Poof to stick his head up between Poof’s front paws. “No. Hur’,” and puffed up trying to look fierce showing what few teeth he had.
Cormier came over and sat on the bed, changing into his cat form. Walking over to Poof he trilled a parent calling to their kitten and licked him then met the kitten’s eyes and sniffed him in acknowledgement then finally gave the kitten a lick from nose to mid-ears.
With a sigh of ‘I’m only one human amongst familiars’, Elert nodded. “Guess we might have a new family member.” He turned Stinky to look the kitten in the eye, “Hear that Stinky Poo. You’ve maybe got a new brother.” He looked at Cormier, “Poof will have to miss early classes tomorrow to go with you, since the kitten feels safe with him. The new kitten has to have his check up and start his immunizations before he can stay at the Crèche during the day.” He sighed again, “I’ll need to take off work too.” Numbering off on his fingers, Elert listed; “There’ll be paperwork to fill out and the Academy powers-that-be will have to be notified about finding a lost kitten so if his parents are looking for him…” his voice petered off. More confidently, “at least we can foster him in the mean time.”
Carrying Stinky to curl him up in the basket beside the bed which of course with all the excitement wasn’t going to last a minute, Elert sternly told him to stay for a minute so he could go get another basket for Poof and their new brother to sleep in. Stinky decided to help and scampering, followed him out of the room.
Looking into the kitten’s face which was still poked out from beneath Poof, Cormier asked, “Do you have a name that you know little one?”
“No ‘ell,” the kitten answered. “Theek-ret,” made Cormier smile.
“Yes, your name should be a secret and that would be a good choice,” Cormier approved nodding. “We can call you No-el. That way when anyone asks your name, you tell them No-el. You won’t be lying but not giving your magick name either. That should be kept secret as someone told you.” Cormier paused, “Who told you not to tell?”
“Mama,” was whimpered. “Mama tol’ me. We runned and black thin’ broke her… she tole me run an she no ther’.”
“Do you know where she went?” Poof asked.
No-el shook his head, “she ther’ but no ther’.”
Cormier asked, “and where did you come from baby?” licking No-el’s face.
Elert and Stinky entered the room carrying a much larger basket with a clean blanket nest inside to here No-el hiss, “Bad p’ace. We scape,” sparkles flying outward.
A tongue swiped over No-el, more comforting than grooming need. Poof had a way with kittens, Cormier thought, when Poof had his own they’d be well loved. It came as no surprise to discover that there were two kittens with Poof in the basket in the morning. By the end of the week the newest family member was once more found curled on the Master bedroom’s bed. Bogeyman in his room was the wary, pleading eyed, no longer stray’s excuse. Noel was adjusting into being family just fine.
