It's the law
Feb. 9th, 2010 07:38 pmHad to post this too.. It's too good to keep silent about.
Stolen from pecunium's live journal entry almost word for word but he knows how to do links:
South Carolina has just passed a law requiring, "subversive agents" to register "Subversive Agent Registration Form"(pdf), with the Secretary of State.
http://fitsnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/SubversiveAgentForm.pdf
(It takes a while to upload, wait for it. It does load.)
Form states:
Check the appropriate box.
Do you or your organization directly or indirectly advocate, advise, teach or practice the duty or necessity of controlling, seizing or overthrowing the government of the United States, the state of South Carolina or any political division thereof?
[ ] YES [ ] NO
Penalties for failing to register are a fine of up to 25,000 dollars and as much as ten years in prison. (notice that it costs $5 to file the form)
Found in the comments:
The form is in violation of the law. (Not the Constitution, the South Carolina law!).
The actual law specifies that the organization must advocate taking control, seizing or overthrowing the government >by force or other illegal means< whereas the form leaves out this rather important qualification.

Lawyers will have fun with this one.
*Laughing*
I too wonder how many members of the 'Americans for a Republican Majority', etc. will register.

Date: 2010-02-10 10:49 pm (UTC)That's hysterical! Right, because every violent subversive is going to trot him- or herself down to the courthouse or wherever and file that form to declare their intentions. [eyeroll] What idiot came up with this thing, and what's the point of it? o_O

Date: 2010-02-11 01:36 am (UTC)I sent a link around to some friends, and one person pointed out that for five bucks you can sic the state of South Carolina on someone. :/ Hadn't thought of that, but... yeah. That could be a lot of fun.

Your friend is scary. That could work.
