I don't know what was in the talk that Kormier and Elert gave Poof but it would have stressed be in control but don't antagonize the demon. So in a way for him it seems inevitable that he'll end up with Arath but he can snark lightly and leaven it with the licks and passing side rubs. Arath is his best source for what to expect if they go to the Demon Plane and anything pearls of wisdom that Kish might drop.
And maybe he's staking his claim on the Demon-wizard a bit.
