When Dr. Walter Stroup showed that Texas’ standardized testing regime is flawed, the testing company struck back.
by Jason Stanford Published on Wednesday, September 3, 2014, at 8:00 CST

Rebellions sometimes begin slowly, and Walter Stroup had to wait almost seven hours to start his. The setting was a legislative hearing at the Texas Capitol in the summer of 2012 at which the growing opposition to high-stakes standardized testing in Texas public schools was about to come to a head. Stroup, a University of Texas professor, was there to testify, but there was a long line of witnesses ahead of him. For hours he waited patiently, listening to everyone else struggle to explain why 15 years of standardized testing hadn’t improved schools. Stroup believed he had the answer.ExpandRead more... )

When he came out of the shower Anthony stopped. His bed pillow held a green velvet box, that alone warned Anthony that James was up to something.

“Open it,” James’ voice came from his phone said.

Adjusting the towel, Anthony moved cautiously towards the bed. “What is it?”

“A small something for you to wear to think of me while you’re at work,” James answered. “You’re naked. Put it on so I can hear you,” he purred.

“It’s a harness,” James continued, “the gold chains go around your waist and hold the emerald so it snuggles, carressingly between your jewels.”

“James?” Anthony started, opening the front of his robe.

James at first looked confused and then his face reddened.

“I don’t think that the chains are real gold,” Anthony said.

“If they aren’t then the stone probably isn’t either,” James continued for him, scowling. “I’ll visit the jeweler tomorrow.

Confronted with the evidence, Gaylord Jewels’ proprietor, frowned. “Most unusual. Gold doesn’t turn forest green. He wore it two days?” He turned the chain harness over and it clung slightly to his hand. Gaylord Smythe cringed. “Did you by any chance, ah, use something like … mint jelly during your, um, playtime?”

Carefully James set the small bag from the jeweler’s on the kitchen counter in front of Anthony.

“Everything okay?” Anthony asked worriedly. “What did the jeweler say?”

James squirmed a bit, “He asked if we’d by any chance used Mint Jelly.”

Anthony blushed and in a small voice asked, “Oh, he did?”

“Seems we aren’t the only ones who’ve had this problem but it’s the first he’s seen Mint Jelly embedded into the gold chain.” The color in James’ face rose, “he asked how it had worked for us, if it tingled and did we use it as lubricant too.”
