“Ensign, Captain wants to see you in his cabin, sir.”

Jones knocked on the wood door and waited until he heard the word, “Enter.”

“You wanted to see me sir?”

“Ah yes. I know that you’re new on board The Hooking Man, but you’ve seen how we earn our treasure now,” Captain Smythe paused, “and I’ve noticed that you’re uncomfortable with the work. Tell me, have you ever been with a man?”

Face red, Jones regarded his toes. “Yes sir. Been at sea since I was young and a cabin boy.”

“Then what is it that disturbs you about the way we acquire our treasure?”

“They’re not human, sir, and sailors don’t make their way on their backs, if you get my meaning.”

Amusement twinkled in the Captain’s eyes, “They do on The Hooking Man and it’s not precisely on their back, there’s a line attached to them. And until you’ve tried it, you shouldn’t distain mer cock. Took a time or two myself, but I’m the Captain and there’s protocol to be respected. Now, I hook only on special occasions .”

“Sir!?”

“Ask Wilton, he’s eager to be bait. Hogs all the action to himself. I’m thinking we should have a double dunk, Wilton and you next time, to get your ass wet. We’ll put a shingle up that you’re mer-virgin and they might be easy with you,” he shrugged.

“Sir?” Wilton asked later, “they won’t leave him alone, him never being with mer before and all.”

“Remember how you were after your first time?” The captain nodded grinning, “Jones will do fine. I gave him a spin myself. Yes, we’ll be able to pull more treasure in well and true.”

After, the crew growled as Jones again tried to pull rank, being on the hook was prized duty.
