Chapter 2 of the Were-spider series)

Reflected sunlight gleamed gold from the clerestory windows under the wide eaves and yes the Arachnos home was built into the hillside to take advantage of the natural insulation of the earth, in short another burrow but with pretty windows. Penn sat in the car and stared until Archie opened the car door and grinned at him.

“Be brave. Mom won’t eat you.”

Penn got quite the reverse feeling when a voice boomed out, “Not without catsup anyway,” and then laughed. “Your mother could eat anything with catsup on it.” He stuck his hand out, “Welcome. I’m this dangler from a string’s father, James Arthros. Took Millie’s last name, since all the kids were going to be were-spiders anyway. Seemed right, like correct labeling. You’ll probably want to do the same.”

Penn wheeled around to glare at Archie, “WHAT?”

Archie’s dad frowned at his son, “You did ask him to marry you, right?”

“Yes,” Archie sighed, “he’s having a problem with the idea of having kids.”

James grinned, “Oh, is that all? It’s alright son,” he addressed to Penn, “only one at a time. No problem at all though the sibling rivalry can get a bit hairy. Number of times I had to break up a biting scuffle and got bitten myself,” he shook his head. “Lived to tell the tale and there were some tails that got a wailing on after. Should have seen their little eyes when they realized how purring mad their mother was at them. They were afraid they’d killed me.” He shrugged, “venom isn’t lethal, sure stings though which some seem to like when frolicking in bed,” was said with a grin.

“Daaaaad.”

“James, Archie,” laughed a woman surely too young to be Archie's mom, “stop teasing our prospective son-in-law. He’ll find out the truth on his own.”

“Thank you.” Penn paused, “I think. Only one at a time?” he asked hesitantly.

“Usually,” was smiled back, “and the venom only paralyses for a short time especially when they’re young. Nothing to worry about ... if I get any grandkids from my children.” She took his arm leading him into the house, “Speaking of which I’ve put you both on the other side of the house so you can get working on that.” She giggled as she said it.

“Which room Mom?”

“Well we didn’t nee-eed two web rooms, so we put you in there.”

Archie smiled.

Sassy Sausage Breakfast Pie
http://bakebakebake.livejournal.com/3812589.html

Recipe by: Adapted by Willow Bird Baking from my mother-in-law's recipe
Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients:
9-inch pie shell, unbaked (homemade or store-bought)
1 pound breakfast sausage
1 1/2 cups grated Gruyère cheese (or other Swiss cheese)
4 eggs
1 cup half and half (or light cream)
1/4 cup chopped orange/yellow bell pepper
1/4 cup chopped red bell pepper
1/2 medium jalapeño, finely chopped (adjust to your heat preference -- this gives a slight kick)
1/4 cup chopped onion
salt and pepper

Directions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Roll out the pie dough and place it in a pie plate, crimping the edges. Place this in the refrigerator while you prepare the filling.

Brown the sausage and drain on a paper towel lined plate. Mix the cheese and sausage and place into the pie shell. In a medium bowl, lightly beat the eggs and cream together. Mix in the peppers and onion. Salt and pepper the mixture. Pour it into the pie shell over the meat and cheese, adjusting to be sure all the ingredients are spread out. Bake for 40-45 minutes until set and golden. Cool on a rack for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

AUSTIN, Texas — A federal judge on Wednesday struck down Texas' ban on gay marriage but postponed action pending appeals in separate courts. Here's what's pending in the battle over same-sex marriage in Texas:

-The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals

Federal Judge Orlando Garcia decided to give Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott time to appeal his ruling. He did that because the U.S. Supreme Court placed a hold on a similar decision made by a federal court in Utah, which falls under the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals. The 5th Circuit, based in New Orleans, is considered one of the country's most conservative courts and might accept Abbott's argument that the 10th Amendment gives states the right to define marriage.

-Federal Court in Austin

Another gay marriage lawsuit will be heard in Austin, possibly as early as June. Federal Judge Sam Sparks will hear an argument made by a gay couple that the state ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional because it discriminates against them based on their gender. The argument is slightly different from the one made before Garcia and could trigger another round of appeals.

-The U.S. Supreme Court

The Supreme Court overturned the Defense of Marriage Act on June 26 in a case that serves as the basis for Garcia's decision to overturn the Texas ban on gay marriage. The justices who dissented in the 5-4 decision warned that the majority was clearing the way for gay marriage to become a fundamental right. With so many court decisions coming so quickly, the Supreme Court will likely have to pick one case to hear next year in order to settle the matter.
