I provided this first line to a contest Jenna Breen is doing. Two lucky people will be chosen from the entries to receive her new book,
A Little Weird.
That's over here at -

The line bit me.
The five spindly hairy black legs that he could see at the wall’s edge beckoned to him like a hand of a lover or a cunning spider. In a way he hoped it was the latter because anything like that otherwise would be something fallen out of nightmares. The spider couldn’t be all that big, he assured himself but if that were a hand then the body it was attached to didn’t bear thinking of.
“You are going to go check that out, aren’t you?” Chess asked him with a nasty grin. “Can’t leave a lady or a guy waiting.”
“Sure I can. Just watch me,” Rune replied. “It’ll take more than that to get my half of the loot we’ve got and over my dead body. I don’t aim to provide my half to you.”
“Now don’t be like that. She or he wants you to come see her or him. It’s not like they’d let anything unnaturally vicious in here despite the clientele. You offend someone and then we’ll both be tossed out. Just go over there and say no thank you.”
Rune sighed cursing under his breath. This was a real bad idea.
It was a bad idea as it turned out. It wasn’t a spider exactly but it acted like one. His silk wrapped body hung in one of the rooms above stairs next to about five others. The paralysis kept him quiet as he felt the suckling of the smaller version of that beckoning hand. If he survived this he’d find Chess and demand his share of the blood money that providing a brood prey had garnered him.
