At first I thought Kizzia had shown us a graveyard (memorial commemorating war dead) with a tree planted in place of a headstone. *slaps self* Arboretum. Yeah trees. Kizzia's lj
And then I thought about why they might plant a tree to grow down into the body of the fallen in ancient times. One way to anchor the dead so they didn't wander around.

‘Grey and amorphous the fog blanketed the field and part of the road where a low thick tendril reached for the other side. It was creepy.’ He sadly smiled, playing with the words he was composing in his mind.
Trees on the other side of the road were similarly befogged, unsurprising considering that both were fields even if one field held gravestones. There was an undulating disturbance in the mist, and he realized the significance when Liam appeared, tree roots dangling from him. Even the shrub planted by Liam’s parents atop his grave, hadn’t kept his lover from their tryst.
