Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Michigan
The vivid colors and sculpted contours of ancient sandstone cliffs give this area its name. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore stretches for some 42 miles along Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Within this protected area are places where the lake's surf rivals that of a seashore. Forests march right up to the edge of the rocky coast in some spots, while the rock itself dominates along other stretches of shoreline. Giant stone formations have names such as Miners' Castle, Indian Head, and Chapel Rock. They might just as easily have named this place after the many waterfalls in the area, or the massive sand dunes covering five miles of the park's eastern end.
