Poof arrived at the lecture hall later than his normal time. Squeaky had been being fussy. Kormier and Elert had had the baby familiar book open and evidently it was normal behavior for some kittens. They couldn’t control much in their young lives, so sometimes they would act out. A sweet little kitten could change from one moment to the next into a frustrated, scared, needy, angry, small fur ball in any and all combinations. This morning Squeaky had affixed himself to Elert’s pants leg, sinking four sets of sharp little claws, into fabric and Daddy, like a burr and then he’d climbed crying. Papa had lifted Poof up and had him latch onto Squeaky’s nape stimulating the instinctual response that kept kittens from wriggling when being transported from place to place. It took three people to remove one small kitten, Poof thought grinning.

Being late meant that Poof slipped into the first open seat available and promptly found himself in a seat up near the front of the room beside Arath. Evidently, Arath wanted Poof to sit near him and Poof made his displeasure known by sinking claws into the nearest part of Arath, his thigh. The jerk Arath gave was satisfying and Poof slowly turned his head and glared once, before hurriedly getting out a pen and notebook. The professor on the stage gave a grin in their direction and then turned to introduce the first of their guest speakers, a Demon named Malakishel.

Poof wrote the name down and drew an arrow pointing to it, writing ‘any relation?’, in his notebook and twisted it so Arath could read it. Arath wrote in his notebook and twisted it so Poof could see. ‘Father’.

"Ahem," came from the stage and two sets of eyes turned trying to look innocently attentive. "Now that I have all of your attention..."

The lecture started off with, “Now you don’t normally think about demons when you think about familiars. Generally a demon doesn’t require a familiar as both are magical in and of themselves. So you’re probably asking yourself, why is a demon giving a lecture in a Familiar Studies class?

I happen to be consorted with a wizard. Wizard’s usually bond or mate with a familiar if they’re lucky,” he looked down at Arath, “very lucky, and they prize them as the best thing, other than any children they may produce between the two of them, to happen in both their lives. So let’s explore the differences inside Wizard-Demon, which I know best, and Wizard-Familiar bondings or, depending on the combination you are discussing, consorting or mating.”

Poof was scribbling as fast as he could, this could be important to him if the idiot beside him was able to convince him to consort or mate or whatever with him sometime in the distant future… he frowned, very distant future. He noticed that Arath was taking notes but not as energetically which irritated him until on an odd moment he realized that Arath had grown up in half the comparisons being made. His Father was mated to a Wizard. Now there was a question to pose at the end of the lecture, ‘were a Wizard crossed with a Demon’s children wizards or demons or bothish and what would a Demon-Familiar cross become?’

The question when he asked it gained him a smile. The answer; “You wait and see. It’s like a present. Whatever they are, they are your child who you love and teach to do their best at whatever choices they make that will bring them happiness and a love and loving," he coughed and as an aside, "I'm not allowed to say fucking", "of their own into their life. That being said, my children are, as you put it so well, bothish. Some more one way than the other but each an individual who is wonderful in their own way; and,” his, “there’s no bias in my opinion at all,” drew an amused laugh from most of those in the lecture hall.

Arath slipped lower in his chair. Poof without really thinking about it leaned over and groomed behind Arath’s ear in sympathy. Parents. He knew parents. He had two of his own.
