“Andy, voles have five tribes. Each female can have 5 to 10 litters yearly, with five to ten young each litter, which in turn start breeding at one month of age,” Simon patiently hissed in explanation. “So if I eat this one vole,” he held the meadow mouse trapped by its tail, “it will hardly deplete the population at all.”

“Simon, let him go.”

“I’m hungry.”

“He’s a cute little mousie wousie. Let him go Simon.”

“He’s a vole. Remember what happened to your apples trees last winter.”

“They all died, their trunks were girdled.”

“Voles did it.”

“Eat him!”
