"DADA DADA MONSTER!!"

Warne looked up as five terrified kittens barreled noisily through the cat door in the library window, yowling at the top of their lungs.

"DADA IT GONNA EAT MR FARTHINGTON! DADA SAVE HIM!"

The kittens skidded to a halt on the top of his desk where he and Duke were having an enjoyable conversation about the comparative merits of amethyst versus agate crystals in the setting of offensive wards. Three kittens immediately dove for Warne, scrambling up his vest before trying to burrow into various parts of his body - Nebbie burrowed down his vest, Tux into his armpit and Ellis huddled under his chin. Albert, seeing all the good hiding spots on his father were taken, diverted to his grandfather, snuggling into the fluffy belly and - much to Duke's consternation - started kneading and looking for a source of milk.

Buttercup paused to consider her options, and realizing her brothers had beaten her, stopped and boasted "I wasn't scared, I growlded at the monster!"

"Were so scared!" Nebbie peeped, his voice muffled by the fabric of Warne's vest. "You runnded first! Least Albie hissed!!"

"LIAR!" Buttercup poofed to her human form, leaving a cherubic little girl with masses of blond curls - and no clothes - stomping her foot in outrage on her father's desk.

To one side, Papa Duke was trying to surreptitiously divert the brother in question from his kneading. "You'll need your papa for that, little one," he purred, then distracted his grandkitten from his task by starting to comfort groom his head. Albert, quite satisfied by the offer of substitute comfort, snuggled close to Papa Duke's belly, moved his head so the rasping tongue could reach his ears better, and settled down to lick his own paw. Papa Duke chuffed to himself in amusement - Albert at least was easily distracted from his fear, the scary 'monster' forgotten.

"Now now," Warne said sternly to his daughter. "What have I told you about fighting with each other?" He reached out and lifted his daughter on to his knee, careful not to squash the boy kittens arrayed about his person, and wrapped her in the snuggle rug that were scattered about the house for naked kitten situations.

"Not to," Buttercup pouted.

"Not to," Nebbie echoed from inside Warne's vest.

"Wasn't scared," Buttercup muttered under her breath.

"Buttercup . . . " Warne's voice held a clear tone of warning that silenced the small girl. Instead she turned her face and burrowed into Warne's chest, her arms going around his waist, heedless of any squishing of her brother's that might occur. Nebbie squeaked once, but after a slight wriggle, adjust his position so he wasn't being smothered.

"Now, whose going to tell me about this monster?" Warne asked, having settled the kittens to a point where he might get some sense out of them.

"Was in Mr Farthington's backyard . . . " Came Tux's voice from an armpit.

"Big metal monster!" Ellis piped in, still under Warne's chin.

"ROARED LIKE A DRAGON!!!" Nebbie added.

"Tried to eat us!" Albert paused in his grooming and looked up at his grandfather as if getting the older cat's agreement would add veracity to the tale.

"I'm going back to SAVE HIM!" Buttercup declared, struggling to get down off her father's lap.

Warne grinned at Duke - he doubted it was a coincidence that today was the first day of spring and a 'monster' had suddenly appeared in the neighbourhood. "Hold on there young lady, you're not going anywhere without putting your dress and shoes on. And then Papa Duke and I will lead you in a fearless expedition to see what this monster is all about!"

There were a few initial shivers from the boy kittens and a big grin from Buttercup as she hopped to the floor and ran off through the house yelling at the top of her lung for Reies to find her pinafore and stockings. But then, three heads popped out of their paternal hiding places, and Albert leapt up from his position in the protective curve of Duke's belly.

"YETH," he lisped. "WE WILL DESTHROY IT!"

(Tail of kitten terror and bravery bought to you by the two fluffy tabby kittens in my backyard today while I was mowing the lawns - I scared them when I dropped a pile of weeds near them and they skittered off through the hedge like their tails were on fire. And then they came back but the lawnmower similarly chased them away. Also, I can never remember the boy kittens names so I have to look at the post you made that lists them!)
