On the plus side in "Lair of the Ice Worm", it mentions there's a critter that eats them and it looks like a Pill bug/rolly-polly/it's a crustacean (they like to live under rocks and wet leaves and such and when touched they turn into a grey bead).

Life under extreme conditions without the energy source of the sun involved, it's pretty awesome if you can get past all the legs and bristly antenna like parts.
