I was told many many years ago by someone who use to do maintenance on miltary aircraft that pilots would periodically complain that the gyroscope was stuck and that it needed to be fixed. He'd wait until they weren't around and use the standard method of fixing it. When stuck you kicked it to break it loose.

Sometimes hit it with a hammer does work... especially if it's a nail not attached to any fingers.
