"Double Churn Dash" Quilt

Quilt Size: 68" x 88" 12 big blocks, 3 blocks by 4 blocks

Supplies:

• 1 Roll of 2½" Print Strips
• 2¾ yds. Background
• 1¼ yds. Contrasting
• 1¼ yds. Border (4 ½ ” wide border)
• ¾ yd. Binding
• 5½ yds. Backing (45" wide fabric)

double churn dash

Easy 8 method
Layer contrast fabric square and background fabric square (10” squares)
draw lines diagonally from the corners in an X and sew ¼ ” seams on either side of these lines.
Cut across square from the middle of each side to the opposite side, then cut on the diagonal lines.
= 8 half square triangle squares (enough to do one finished block)

Square these up to 4 ½”
Cut the center square of the contrast fabric to 4 ½”

Sew two 2 ½” strips together; a color strip fabric and a background fabric strip.
Make 2 of these sewn together strips, use 2 similar color family strip fabrics per finished block
Cut 4 rectangles 4 ½” long from strips, 2 of each color combination

For the inner square
Arrange same color combination 4 ½” rectangles on opposite sides on center contrast 4 ½” square with color part of strip against contrast center and sew together into a Row.

Arrange 2 of the ½ square triangle squares on either side of the other similar color strip 4 ½” rectangle. Sew together into a Row.

Make sure that the edge of the contrast fabric of the ½ square triangle is against the rectangle and the color fabric strip will be sewn against the right angle of that square.

Make 2 of these strip/ ½ square triangle combinations rows. Sew these rows on either side of center block/strip row.
This is the inner part of the block = square 12 ½”

For Outer part of block arrangement
Cut strip set same length as the inner block square 12 ½”

Sew strips into rows similarly to inner square, 2 strips to center block row, 2 rows of ½ square triangles. Alternate the similar color family strip fabrics, so outer similar color is different from inner similar color rows as they are added.

Sew rows together with the 2 rows of ½ square triangles on either side of center.
